background
Verdant rolling fields in the center of Eastern Mississippi hold the key to a great way of life. Here lies Winston County, a thriving community exuding gracious hospitality and sparkling with enthusiasm for the future. By keeping an eye on its incredible past yet remaining focused on the prosperous horizons ahead, Winston County residents concentrate their efforts to make this a better community for all who call it home.
This area was first settled by the Choctaw Indians, who have been here for at least 1,500, possibly 2,500 years. A sacred mound, Nanih Waiya, is believed to be the birthplace of the Choctaw tribe. Such ancient heritage encourages deep respect for the county's origins and fosters their preservation efforts.
Officially formed on December 23, 1833, Winston County is today a bustling example of what successes may be accomplished by the teamwork of dedicated public and private sector leaders and concerned governmental bodies. Winston County is blessed with a highly skilled and conscientious labor force. Mississippi is a right to work state.
A wide variety of businesses and industries make Winston County their home, ensuring a broad economic base on which the community may rely. Planners quickly saw the wisdom of diversifying the business community so that the area would not be dependent on a single industry for its economic well-being. A number of industries have been in the Winston County area for over 50 years, indicating that it is a stable, profitable economic environment. Just a brief sampling of the goods produced here includes custom sewn industrial products, conveyors for the catfish industry, building bricks, industrial work gloves, chemicals, lift trucks and material lifting equipment, and wood products.
When the work day is done, stretch your horizons by exploring the cultural opportunities available in Winston County. Residents may express their their artistic side through involvement in an active community theater or the local arts commission. View fine works by professional artisans at a museum in Louisville maintained by the American heritage Art Foundation. Art and artifact displays are featured regularly at the museum. Local and regional artists and craftsmen demonstrate their talents at the Red Hills Festival, held annually in late May.
In addition to cultural resources, the county is filled with recreational and educational opportunities. Such qualities render Winston County a well-rounded place to live and raise a family. Community involvement is also an integral part of life here, enriching those who serve as well as the recipients of the organizations' efforts.
Visualize yourself living in a hometown where the people are friendly and forward-thinking, and concerned for their neighbors and for the economic future of the area.
